Laser Vision Correction Types

Not all laser vision correction surgery is the same. Take advantage of several types of vision correction procedures including traditional and all-laser LASIK, ZEISS SMILE, PRK/ASA, and Verisyse® Phakic intraocular lens procedures. At Fichte Endl & Elmer Eyecare, you’ll experience what state-of-the-art laser technology and a highly skilled surgical team can do for you.

ZEISS SMILE

This is not your parent’s LASIK! ZEISS SMILE is the newest most advanced laser vision correction procedure & it just arrived in Western New York. The ZEISS SMILE procedure is faster than LASIK, less invasive, and allows you to get back to life, as usual, the very next day. Swim, wear make-up, and go back to the gym quicker with ZEISS SMILE! With over 7 million ZEISS SMILE procedures performed worldwide, ZEISS SMILE is safe, proven & effective.

Traditional LASIK means new vision for you!

Traditional LASIK has been performed as a trusted vision correction procedure for decades. The benefits are multifaceted: fast visual recovery, little or no discomfort, lower risk of haze, glare and halos and many satisfied patients! Using an instrument called a microkeratome, your surgeon will create a flap on the surface of your cornea. This flap will provide access to the tissue underneath, which will be reshaped with a laser. Good candidates for LASIK over 18 years old and have sufficiently thick corneal tissue to allow for the procedure. Those with thin corneas, dry eye syndrome, early signs of cataracts or other conditions may not be candidates for LASIK.

Experience All-Laser Blade-Free LASIK treatment

At Fichte, Endl & Elmer Eyecare, you have access to the FDA-approved IntraLase® laser. With incredible speed and accuracy, this instrument lets your doctor gently separate the layers of corneal tissue in your eye, creating a flap precise in its thickness, size, orientation and location. Next, your doctor will reshape your cornea, improving your vision permanently! It’s the next generation of LASIK surgery.

Wavefront: LASIK treatment as unique as you are

Conventional laser treatments strictly utilize your prescription when reshaping your cornea – but there is more to your eye than your prescription! You’ll benefit from Wavefront technology – a system that analyzes waves of light exiting your eye to note your own unique optical imperfections. This analysis is converted to a 3D map that guides your doctor, using an Excimer laser, in reshaping your cornea to give you optimal vision! Custom laser treatments can also lower the occurrence of common, unwanted visual effects associated with conventional treatment, like glare and halos.

Blended LASIK: Imagine better vision for all ranges of vision

If you are nearing your middle years, you may be experiencing the almost universal condition called “presbyopia.” Due to the natural hardening and enlarging of the crystalline lenses in your eyes, you may find reading difficult without reading glasses or bifocals. If you are beginning to hold reading material further and further from your face, but aren’t experiencing a loss of distance vision, you have options! One of the more popular techniques for dealing with presbyopia is monovision correction. This treatment involves correcting one eye for near vision and the other eye for distance vision. Your brain quickly adapts to your new vision system, eliminating the need for readers, bifocals or trifocals. Although many patients are satisfied with the monovision correction, some dislike its effect. If this occurs, there are remedies available for you to achieve the best possible outcome.

What is an Excimer Laser?

Excimer Laser

The excimer laser is a key element in our LASIK procedures. It emits ultraviolet light of a specific wavelength to precisely remove corneal tissue. An excimer laser corrects nearsightedness by flattening the cornea; farsightedness by making the cornea steeper; and astigmatism can be corrected by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more symmetrical shape. This procedure allows light rays to focus properly onto the retina improved vision.

PRK/ASA

Photorefractive keratectomy/advanced surface ablation (PRK/ASA) may be an option for vision correction. Using an Excimer laser, your doctor will remove the epithelium – the protective surface layer – of your cornea. Then, using cool laser technology, your doctor reshapes your cornea. A soft contact lens protects your eye as it heals for about a week, with full recovery in two or three weeks. You may experience mild to marked discomfort and blurry vision at first. You’ll experience most of your vision improvement in the first month, with some additional improvement over the course of a year.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

If you are over 40 and want to be rid of reading glasses or bifocals, a procedure called a refractive lens exchange (RLE) may be right for you! This procedure involves the replacement of your eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and/or presbyopia.
