Dr. Michael Endl, ophthalmologist and partner with Fichte, Endl & Elmer Eyecare in Amherst, recently presented colleagues in Paris, France with results of the latest and most comprehensive treatment for astigmatism. The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) conference, which was held September 4-8, attracts surgeons from around the world who want to hear about the latest techniques being used in surgery. Dr. Endl, speaking on behalf of the work of all three ophthalmologists at the Amherst-based practice, presented the successful results of an FDA-approved trial using the latest “eye tracker” technology to treat astigmatism. The treatment helps to reduce the need for reading glasses for patients over the age of 50.
Earlier this year, Fichte, Endl & Elmer Eyecare was the only Western
New York ophthalmology practice selected to provide the FDA-approved treatment. The new procedure utilizes the new Advanced Control Eye (ACE) equipment from Bausch & Lomb, which is a tracking device for a surgical laser designed to measure the angle and position of the astigmatism. This new technology allows for the tracking of the exact position of the eyes throughout the entire laser procedure so that none of the astigmatism is “missed” as was the case with older technologies. Patients seeking more information about the procedure can contact the practice at 1-800-309-2020.
