What Does Refractive Surgery Actually Feel Like?

Most people researching vision correction can find plenty of information about how LASIK works, the cornea, the laser, the flap. What’s harder to find is an honest answer to the question that’s actually keeping you up at night: what is it going to feel like? Here’s a straight answer.

Will It Hurt?

The honest short answer is, for most people, no! Most people do not equate the sensations with pain. Before the procedure begins, your surgeon applies numbing drops to each eye. By the time the laser treatment starts, your eyes are fully anesthetized. Most patients describe feeling (if anything) pressure, a brief, dull sensation, but not pain.

What Happens Once You’re in the Chair

The procedure itself is over faster than most people expect. You’ll be asked to focus on a light while the laser works. The active laser treatment typically takes less than a minute per eye.

Some patients notice a faint mechanical sound, which is very normal. Your job during the procedure is simply to hold still as best as you can and keep your eye on the target light. The laser tracks your eye automatically and adjusts in real time if you shift slightly, so there’s no danger in a small, involuntary movement.

What Does Vision Look Like Right After?

Immediately after the procedure, some patients describe their vision as hazy, similar to looking through frosted glass. However, many notice an improvement right away. For others, their new vision may take some adjusting to. You can expect your vision to begin to improve within hours of the procedure.

You’ll need a driver home, and most surgeons recommend going straight to sleep for a few hours. Light sensitivity is common for the rest of the day. By the following morning, the majority of LASIK patients are already seeing significantly better.

The Recovery Isn’t the Same for Every Procedure

This is where patient experiences genuinely differ, and it’s worth understanding before you choose a procedure.

With LASIK, visual recovery is typically fast. Most patients see clearly within 24 hours.

PRK/ASA skips the corneal flap entirely, which makes it a better fit for some patients, but the surface healing takes longer. Vision improves over several days to a week, and mild discomfort is more common in the first few days.

With the EVO ICL, which involves implanting a lens rather than reshaping the cornea, patients often notice crisp vision very quickly after the procedure, sometimes the same day.

The right procedure depends on your prescription, corneal thickness, lifestyle, and other factors your surgeon will evaluate. ZEISS SMILE is another option, which is a flapless, minimally invasive approach with a very small incision and a recovery experience that most patients describe as comfortable.

No description of the experience is more useful than hearing it from someone a surgeon.
