So, how long does LASIK take? Let’s break down the three steps of the Advanced LASIK procedure.
1. The Femto-second laser takes about a minute per eye.
This step creates of the corneal flap. This is a thin segment of the outer layer of the cornea that is cut to create a flap. This step is performed with a special, computer-controlled Femto-second laser, which creates a thinner, more precise and stable flap.
2. The Excimer laser takes usually less than one minute per eye.
The flap is lifted as the Excimer laser makes corrections as small as 0.25 microns at a time. That’s 4,000 times smaller than a grain of sand. This step is based on a 3-D map of your individual eye, which is programmed into the laser so the exact amount of corneal tissue is removed for the best vision outcome possible.
3. Finishing up the procedure takes about two minutes per eye.
This is the last step, and it’s simply smoothing the flap back into place.
Now do some quick math. That’s right — Advanced LASIK only takes less than ten minutes! The total office visit lasts for only about an hour with the procedure. You can expect to feel little to no pain with the slightest sensation of pressure and little to no downtime.
